Academic Russian Language Course A1.1

Target audience: university beginners, international foundation-year students, exchange program participants
Format: online or in-person, 64 academic hours (4 hours per week over 16 weeks)

Course Objective
To develop a foundational communicative competence in Russian:
– understand and use everyday expressions
– introduce yourself and others
– ask and answer questions about personal details
– interact in simple communication situations
– master basic grammar and orthographic rules
Course Structure
Module 1: Sounds and Letters (Weeks 1–2)
Topics: Cyrillic alphabet, reading rules, stress, phonemes, pronunciation principles.
Module 2: Greetings and Introductions (Weeks 3–4)
Topics: introducing yourself, polite dialogues, countries and professions.
Module 3: Personal Information & Family (Weeks 5–6)
Topics: family, age, address, phone numbers, genitive case, possessive pronouns.
Module 4: Daily Life (Weeks 7–8)
Topics: routine, work/study/leisure, present tense verbs, frequency adverbs.
Module 5: Space & Location (Weeks 9–10)
Topics: city, housing, rooms, prepositions of place, prepositional case.
Module 6: Shopping, Food & Cafes (Weeks 11–12)
Topics: food, shops, cafes, accusative case, modal expressions.
Module 7: Motion Verbs and Transport (Weeks 13–14)
Topics: transport, motion, directions, imperative mood, basic future.
Module 8: Revision and Final Assessment (Weeks 15–16)
Topics: review, presentation, final writing/speaking tasks.
Assessment
Listening, reading, writing, and speaking exam. A certificate is awarded upon passing.

Week 1: People and Everyday Life
Communicative topics:
- Daily routine and personal schedule
- Seasons and climate
- Hobbies and leisure activities
- Character, temperament, habits
Grammar:
- Review of present tense (first and second conjugation)
- Adverbs of manner and frequency
- Agreement of adjectives
- Structures: “to love / to be interested in / to do + instrumental case”
Speaking skills:
- Composing brief oral narratives
- Asking clarifying questions
- Writing short descriptions of oneself and daily routine
Week 2: Shopping, Needs, and Services
Communicative topics:
- At the store, market, pharmacy
- Food, clothing, everyday goods
- Colors, sizes, price categories
- Simple complaints and requests
Grammar:
- Accusative case (animate and inanimate)
- Modal constructions: “need to / can / cannot”
- Future tense of verbs (with verb “to be”)
- Quantity clarification: “many / few / some” + genitive case
Speaking skills:
- Shopping dialogues
- Writing lists, requests, instructions
- Correspondence (messages/service requests)
Week 3: City, Orientation, and Transport
Communicative topics:
- City navigation
- Public transport and schedules
- Geographical objects
- Addresses, directions, maps
Grammar:
- Motion verbs with prefixes
- Prepositions of direction and place: in / on / from / by / to / toward
- Imperative mood
- Pronoun constructions: “to whom? where to?”
Speaking skills:
- Oral route explanations
- Dialogues on “How to get there?”
- Instructional writing
Week 4: Study, Work, Communication. Final Integration
Communicative topics:
- Study day and university life
- Professions and work activities
- Academic writing: forms, letters, emails
- Course review
Grammar:
- Tense system: present / future / past (introduction)
- Comparative degree of adjectives (introduction)
- Overview of six cases: functions, usage patterns
- Typical syntactic structures of academic speech
Speaking skills:
- Writing formal letters
- Oral presentation on “About myself and my studies”
- Dialogue in formal settings (interviews, with instructors)
Final Assessment
Format:
- 📘 Listening: comprehension of 2 texts (everyday and academic styles)
- ✍️ Writing: formal email + vocabulary task
- 🗣️ Monologue (2–3 minutes) and dialogue on a communicative topic
Assessment Criteria:
- Grammatical accuracy
- Appropriateness to communicative task
- Speech volume and structure
